Product Description Conceived to be a donor to her cancer-stricken sister, eleven-year-old Anna decides to sue her parents for emancipation.
Amazon.com Grab a box of tissues and settle in for a heart-wrenching exploration of illness, morality, and familial bonds in this excellent screen adaptation of bestselling author Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper. When parents Sara (Cameron Diaz) and Brian Fitzgerald (Jason Patric) find out that their daughter Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) has leukemia, they make the difficult choice to utilize the advancements of modern medicine and impregnate Sara with a child genetically ensured to be a donor match for Kate. Throughout the many years of dealing with Kate's illness, the needs of individual family members--including Kate's parents, her brother Jesse (Evan Ellingson), and her sister Anna (Abigail Breslin)--are largely ignored in light of Kate's more serious needs. Still, Kate's sister Anna rarely complains about helping Kate, even when it involves undergoing painful bone marrow aspirations. Recently, however, Anna has had a change of heart and has decided to stand up for her right to have a say in medical procedures involving herself: she's enlisted a lawyer, Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin), to help her sue her parents for medical emancipation. The issue is highly emotional and the familial strife is further compounded by the fact that Kate is quickly failing and needs an immediate kidney transplant for even a chance of continued survival. The emotional struggle of dealing with serious illness while trying to meet one's own needs permeates the film, as do the staggering moral dilemmas inherent in the advances of modern medicine. While Picoult's readers may be disappointed that the film doesn't delve as deeply into Anna's and Jesse's characters as the book does, My Sister's Keeper is nonetheless an intensely powerful film bursting with emotion and moral quandary that leaves viewers pondering what lengths they might go to in a similar situation. --Tami Horiuchi

My Sisters Keeper DVD July 26, 2010 Donna & Len Robinson This was a wonderful movie. I watched it 4 times after I got it. The acting was so good..the dying girl was so fantastic I cried. The little sister is a fantastic actress. Easy to buy from Amazon, safe and easy.
Good tear jerker June 29, 2010 J. Kennel (Terre Haute, IN USA) Just a couple of points to add: I have heard a number of people since I watched this say it did not follow the book so they were disappointed. I liked the actors in this and have not seen Cameron Diaz in anything but a comedy before, so this was a great view of another side of her acting. I liked it enough to sit through it all, and the outdoor scenes were beautiful, but I would not recommend this to everyone. If you've been through a lengthy illness yourself or have cared for a terminally ill loved one, this may hit too close to home and be depressing. I'd say 4 out of 5 on this because I was impartial going into it, so I wasn't disappointed as others were that it didn't follow the book. Definitely a movie that makes you think--ethics, moral issues, feeling helpless, and what would YOU do in those situations.
great movie June 28, 2010 Ritz (N.M.) This is a great but sad movie. Have a box of kleenex when you sat down to watch it.
You will never forget this movie. The tenderness, love, and compassion this family
has for one another is so powerful.
Moments June 21, 2010 Ron (Jersey) This movie had so much going for it. A good tear jerker about a girl dying of cancer along with a thought provoking premise of a family that basically had a child because the child would make a good donor for all the things the sick child would need to survive. I really like sappy movies at times and will find myself crying over some really bad movies. This movie didn't effect me enough to bring that out. I really found myself disliking most of the characters. Aside from Cameron Diaz, most of the characters were not fleshed out nearly enough to even remotely understand why they did what they do in the movie, let alone care about their plight in any way. I just didn't like this one much.
Tears of sorrow and happiness June 13, 2010 Kerri Busteed (Wisconsin) My Sister's Keeper was only made better, in my opinion, by bringing it to film. I loved the story line in the book - a young girl is sueing her parents for the rights to make her own medical decisions. Why you might ask? She was born for the sole purpose of helping her sister live. They have used her for cord blood, bone marrow, blood transfusions and more and now she wants to be able to live without worry of losing one of her organs to her sister as well. The two young girls in the film do an excellent job portraying the sisters in the story. One sick and one hospitalized for her sister many times. The girls parents soon take sides as to whether or not she has the right to stop being there for her sister. Do you side with the sick child who needs a transplant to live or the healthy one that doesn't want to be used for her body parts any more? A tough situation for anyone to be in.
I am a nurse, so I admit medical drama is my life. I have read several of Jodi Picoult's books for the sake of her bringing tough questions like this to the table for debate. If you are one that likes to have a good cry during your reading or viewing of a movie, then this is a great movie to watch.
